I spent the whole month (of which I was able to climb) at my home gym. 7 days, 35 climbs. Photo for this month is my excitement about being back climbing and it feeling good on the 21st, 1 month and 1 day after my appendectomy.

Jesse suggested assigning each grade a value to find the “average” climb of the month. Since I have so few grades, this was a good month to experiment with that. This month, I sent everything since I was climbing so low, and the average was 5.7.

June Goals:

  • Don’t climb until/unless it feels okay! - I think I did a really good job of this. I first tried on the 11th, climbed an “intro,” and realized quickly that it wasn’t right yet. I have been willing to stop every time something felt even a little “off,” without waiting for pain.
  • Develop comeback framework to ensure I take it slow - I set myself some parameters and have been sticking to them strictly.
  1. No overhangs for the 8 weeks my doctor said would be my recovery time. (the major concern is for my abdominal muscles and fascia)
  2. Start with nothing above an 8, and add one grade at a time after spending a whole week at the previous grade.
  3. No lead (or lead belay) or bouldering for the 8 recovery weeks.
  4. If anything feels even a little weird, done for the day. This is not something to push through.
